DIGITAL PAINTINGS
One thing I really enjoy is working in digital media to make my art. I like posting my art online and this provides and incentive for me to develop on my digital art skills. As I want to go into the concept art industry, it's important for me to practise these skills. Also, Digital Art can be a great way of improving your art skills, as I have found that being able to use the liquify tool to fix my proportions, use the undo button, experiment with different styles of brushes and colour palettes, all without loss of material or consequences, has been very helpful for my creative practise.
Peter Murphy sketch and paint
With this piece I used a traditional sketch that I scanned into my iPad and worked on top of in Procreate using an opaque flat brush to maintain the sketchy feel. I also used the liquify tool multiple times to fix the proportions where I hadn't got them quite right. I start tonal, as I posted this to a collaboration page where our aesthetic is grayscale art.
I coloured this piece over the top using a Caravaggio inspired colour palette that I created by colour-picking a Caravaggio piece in Procreate.
This is the brush set I used for this piece, I only used the Scratchboard and Thickn'Thin brushes, which helped me to blend a little with the opacity of the brushes, but also keep a sketchy feel that was true to the piece.
Marc Bolan sketch
Here I use the same HB pencil brush as seen in my other piece's brush-set. I worked on top of a paper texture vector, as this helps to blur the line between traditional and digital, which I enjoy doing in my digital art.
David Bowie Full Render
I created this piece after finding a video on youtube which explained one of Bowie's darker characters 'The Thin White Duke.' I was intrigued by this character and listened to the album linked to that character 'Station to Station' and I really enjoyed the atmosphere of it, so I decided to make some art inspired by it.
I used the same Cravaggio colour Palette as before, but used a different brush pack. I purchased this brush set from @morgyuk (on Instagram) because I was immediately fascinated by the notion that they were supposed to look like real oil paint. She uses this brush pack in her work and I really liked the look of it so wanted to give them a go. Again blurring the line between digital and traditional media with using realistic looking digital brushes. I think they even handle and behave a lot like regular oil paint, which was very interesting. I really enjoy the ambience of this piece, and my handling of chiaroscuro really reflects the character.
