For the uninitiated, listening to vinyl records became popularised amongst younger people through websites like Tumblr and Pinterest in 2013/14 which created a kind-of aesthetic out of it. Not widely popular but it definitely introduced it to a lot of younger people, which is when I also started to listen to my dads records on his record player. Through this I got to listen to a lot of Bowie records that I wouldn't otherwise have been aware of, I think the first one I listened to was Hunky Dory but my favourite ended up being Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. Following this structure: Intentions: -send picture of sculptures to Emily for blog -finish a Daniel Ash sculpture and send to Emily for blog -Carry on with painting experiments and Sketchbook work Diary: (in order from bottom to top) Conclusion: I was able to send the pictures of my sculptures to Emily on time. I sculpted Daniel Ash in 5 hours and in one sitting which is a record time for me, though he probably would've looked more accurate if I had of taken my time with it. I've completed the set and now I'm exhausted and want to focus on doing a bit of my 2D work. Next week, I'll aim to do a bit of digital art and some more sketchbook work as I'm getting quite into my sketchbook work. I've been painting David J a lot so maybe I'll have a go at drawing someone else. I also want to have a go at casting in Latex following on from the silicone casting failure.

Kandinsky Wassily Kandinsky-Kleine Welten IV  So since my final major is predominantly inspired by music, it would be amiss for me to not mention the work of Kandinsky. I won't use him as a main artist, but I feel that the way I work in terms of using music as inspiration for art will be similar whether that is intentional or not. Kandinsky was highly accredited for pioneering the abstract art movement, through his use of abstraction in his paintings, which focus on the relationship between line and colour. He believed he had synaesthesia , which enabled him to hear music and attribute colours to the sound. The accredibitlity of the condition is largely questioned mainly because depending on how you view it, everyone could be able to attribute colours to sounds as we are all told things such as 'blue is a sad colour' so people attribute it to music that sounds sad or is in a minor key. Following this structure: Intentions: -Continue to develop my sketchbook work -Post my artist research -Start a new sculpture Diary: Conclusion: My Sketchbook work has really been coming along this week, although I think I'm overthinking things a lot. I'm struggling to give my work meaning, or more like the meaning of the pieces is getting in the way of being able to draw. I've been discovering new music (Thankyou, David J and Duende) and this has fuelled my creativity largely. I'm also becoming more in tune to my sculpting practise, as I tend to be able to tell when things start to go wrong in the beginning and restarting, rather than struggling on can often be the best policy when sculpting. Dealing with burn out, the sketchbook work has been really helpful to me. Next week, I want to finish my David J sculpture but continue to focus my 2D work, with doing lots of paintings, as I feel that this has been very helpful.

Where have I been? Well, I've still been making things and producing work, but in terms of all written thing aside from the unit 5 proposal, I just stopped . I just couldn't bring myself to stop for a second to sit and write. This all started when the silicone I ordered arrived, but when I came to cast with it, it wouldn't cure because I was using a latex mould. But I wasted a fair amount of silicone which I got quite upset about because I was really excited for it to work and I'd just gotten everything everywhere and the whole house stank of turps (which made me a very popular member of the family during this lockdown period)-so yeah, got myself into a bit of a pickle over it. This fuelled the fire of trying to prove to myself that I can sculpt and I devised this insanity mission of sculpting the faces of all of Bauhaus in a week (spoiler: I didn't, and it would never have happened-hence it was an utter insanity mission). Following this structure: Intentions for the week: -Begin a sketchbook -Strip Armature to start Kevin Haskins sculpture -Start new sculpture Diary: Conclusion: I am happy with the progress I made this week. My Kevin Haskins sculpture is going well but I am feeling quite burnt out, the 2D work might start to become a focus in my work. The constant success and failure that is a part of the sculpting process is actually a lot to take on as an artist especially if you're already quite self-critical, and dealing with it can be quite frustrating so taking breaks in between sculptures is definitely a better idea than completing everything all at once. Next week, I'll aim to do some more 2D work and put less focus on the sculpting so that I can keep my sanity.
