STAND-ALONE PAINTINGS

Image
David J (oil pastel on paper with gold leaf and watercolour pencil) This was one of my first oil pastel drawings. I worked from a black and white image so that I had control over the colours I wanted to use. I ended up sticking to semi-realistic colours, but also adding in blues and purples very discreetly which I think is quite effective as it makes the piece more interesting to look at. I like the treatment of chiaroscuro here as well, the bright face against the dark background works surprisingly well. I used the paint roller here to create the dark background, which gave the oil pastel something to grip to better than it would if I had just drawn onto the paper.  While I don't like the gold leaf that I added to this piece after I had finished the piece, I do like the composition of this piece and over all I think it works well. It reminded me of the Love and Rockets song 'Body and Soul Parts 1&2' from the 1994 album Hot Trip to Heaven, so I added the lyrics from the...

WEEK 10

Image
Following this structure: Intentions: -Do some oil painting studies in conjunction with my experiments of making acrylic paint work like oil -Finalise some sketchbook work Diary: (order from bottom to top) Conclusion: Again this week, the anxiety of dealing with more applications got the better of me. Hopefully that will be the end of it for a bit. I did manage to digitalise some of my work which is a start this week. Now I know that I'm definitely going to university this year which is really exciting!! Next week I desperately need to begin my final piece using the sculptures that I have and this needs to be my focus!

WEEK 9

Image
Following this structure: Intentions: -work more on my sketchbook -plan for my Final Piece a little bit and decide where I want to take my sculptures Diary: Conclusion: Unfortunately, I was totally incapacitated with anxiety and running around to finalise my application to do much work. I've done a couple of comfort pieces here and there to help with the anxiety, like a Peter Murphy portrait in oil pastel that I quite like. The anxiety about starting my application was bad, but the anxiety about finalising it was way worse, way way worse. I don't think I've ever experienced anything that felt that bad in a while. I think that's why I like to listen to loud music, because its louder than the anxiety, if that makes sense. But that's how I've dealt with this week a couple of portraits here and there, playing my bass, listening to a lot of music and dealing with the application itself. Hopefully everything is sorted now, so next week I'll intend on working on my...

WEEK 8

Image
Following this structure: Intentions -Following on from the failures of sculpting, I want to do a bit of painting instead, I want to do some more portraits using watermixable oil medium and acrylic, just to see how they turn out and to explore this idea further. -I need to rest and take it a little slower so that I don't completely burn myself out. Sketchbook studies and pages will be my focus.  Diary: Conclusion: I had a nice, slow-paced week of painting and listening to my new record (Crocodile Tears and the Velvet Cosh by David J!). I have been enjoying the combination of water mixable oil medium with my acrylic paint, in some instances it seems to work out really well and make my acrylic behave just like oil paint, which is very exciting. I did really need a slower paced week and I feel like it has done me a lot of good confidence wise and also energy wise. Next week, I intend on  continuing on with my sketchbook, and still leaving my sculptures for a little bit as I don't...

SKETCHBOOK WALKTHROUGH - 2

Image
My main intentions with my second sketchbook were to experiment with different materials as well as create interesting images in the hopes that I could find a specific style. Going from sculpting, the transition to focusing on 2D work instead was interesting but quite freeing because I was finding the sculpting very laborious, so my sketchbook work was initially a reprieve from that which I began to focus on towards the end of the sketchbook.  The quality of the scanner caused the colours to be distorted, and in places where I have used gold the scanner also struggled to pick these up. 1)Portrait of Daniel Ash using Caran D'ache necolour wax oil pastels 2)Eye-study of the same person using the same materials. I found these wax oil pastels that I had been given a long time ago and had never used them so I wanted to test them out. Over the course of the portrait, I found that they layered really nicely and were very vibrant, as well as blending very nicely with a blending stump. Unli...

WEEK 7

Image
Following this structure: Intentions:  -Continue on with sketchbook work, experimenting with acrylic paint specifically and my Caran D'ache wax oil pastels -Cast all of the Bauhaus sculptures in latex Diary: Concluion: While I was able to cast the Bauhaus sculptures in Latex with an expanding foam core, I don't feel like this is what I want my Final Piece to look like. They came out looking wrinkley, orange and the foam hadn't adhered properly to the cotton on the inside of the latex. The Modroc Moulds have got damp on them as well, so I don't really want them hanging around for very long. It's quite disappointing to feel like I keep failing at what I want to achieve. This is not what we were aiming for, I don't think it's even human, all I know is that it should never see the light of day again Next week, I intend to put down the sculpting for a bit and focus purely on my sketchbook work and painting. I need a breather from the stress of moulding and demoul...
